Meet our fabulous teachers!
Jo Drury (Schwalben/Swallows) has a B.S. in Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is also certified in Wisconsin as a Teacher for German (grades 6-12). She has taught German at several middle schools in Wisconsin and currently teaches German at the Madison Waldorf School. She also has extensive teaching experience through the Concordia Language Villages immersion program (Waldsee). As someone who has lived and worked in multiple cities in Germany for over a decade she is very familiar with German culture and Germany as a workplace. This is her fourth year with our school.
Jonathan Gillette (Möwen/Seagulls) is a middle/high school teacher (Realschule) hailing from Germany, where he taught English as a Foreign Language, Physical Education, and Social Studies for over 10 years. His teaching degree is from the University of Education in Freiburg, Germany. He moved to Madison in 2015 with his native Madisonian wife and his son, who also attends our school. Jonathan teaches German at West High School in Madison. This is his second year with our school.
Delaney Jacobson (Spatzen/Sparrows and co-teacher for Falken/Falcons) is a German and anthropology major at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After spending a semester studying at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn, Germany, she is back for her second year with us. She was also a 2016 and 2017 Sommercamp counselor for us, and is currently the secretary of UW’s German Club. Delaney enjoys working with kids and is excited to be a part of our teaching staff again.
Our Entchen/Ducklings teacher is Michelle Kästner, who trained as a preschool teacher in Germany before she moved to the US. She spent the academic year 2015-16 in Germany, connecting with her family and teaching P.E. at a German elementary school. Her son also attends our school. This is her second year as a teacher for our school.
Elizabeth Allaby is our Eulen/Owls teacher. She holds a B.A. in Germanic Studies from Indiana University and is a Ph.D. student in German linguistics at UW Madison. Elizabeth spent two years in Austria as a Fulbright Teaching Assistant and was a STEM educator and German instructor for AmeriCorps. She has also worked as a camp counselor for middle schoolers. This is her first year with our school.
Kane Neubauer is one of our two co-teachers for the Falken/Falcons class. He has a B.A. in Linguistics from UW-Madison and has coordinated the programming for “Stockwerk Deutsch”, the German language immersion floor for UW housing. He has experience as a summer program foreign language instructor for middle and high schoolers. This is his first year as a teacher for our school.
Mary Ellen Rutemeyer (Adult Class) has an M.A. in German Studies from Ohio State University. She has taught German in the US and in Germany in many different environments, including to immigrants in Berlin. She is happy to return to her second year of teaching for us. Additionally, Mary Ellen is the school’s administrator.
