Our Classes: The school prides itself on small class size, a unified approach to curriculum, and highly-trained teaching staff. The German School of Madison also organizes several well-attended, family friendly events throughout the year, which serve to educate children and adults about German culture and to build connections within the Madison German-speaking community. 

Initial student placement is based on age and the grade a student enters in the Fall. To accommodate different proficiency levels and accomodate Covid-19 restrictions, we keep our class sizes capped at 10 students. Our classes from Pre-K to grades 7+ are designed around a two-year curriculum; students will normally stay in these classes for two years.

Class Descriptions 2025-26

Entchen/Ducklings (Pre-K children 3-5 years old ) – Beginners

Teacher: Esther Maier

  • The Pre-K class is for preschool children aged 3-5 years old. This course provides kids with no prior knowledge of German a taste of German language and culture through songs, games and craft projects. Kids do not need to be able to read or write for this course. 
  • Note: parents/guardians are expected to stay at the school during class time for this class.

Bonus Outdoor Classes: We will begin our year by having 2 classes outdoors in September followed by a total of 25 weeks of instructions from October 2025 – May 2026.

  • Tuition: $375 – $475 with optional donation
  • Class Size: 10 maximum

Spatzen/Sparrows (Children entering Kindergarten or 1st grade) – Beginners

Teacher: Kathrin Rogalsky

  • The Spatzen class is for kindergartners and first-graders. In this beginner German class, students are introduced to the German language and culture in a playful, age-appropriate way, through games, story-telling and crafts! No prior knowledge of German is required.

Falken/Falcons (Children entering 2nd or 3rd grade)

Teacher: Lena Wiebe

  • The Falken class is for second- and third-graders. Students in this class continue to expand their communicative abilities in German and their knowledge of grammar and spelling. They learn to write short texts in German and are also introduced to topics relevant to German culture. Language beginners are accommodated.

Bonus Outdoor Classes: We will begin our year by having 2 classes outdoors in September followed by a total of 25 weeks of instructions from October 2025 – May 2026.

  • Tuition: $840 – $940 with optional donation

Eulen/Owls (Children entering 4th or 5th grade)

Teacher: Isabelle Marema

  • The Eulen class is for fourth- and fifth-graders. This class deepens students’ understanding of German grammar and culture. Students will read short books and write short essays while building vocabulary and grammar nuances.
    • Tuition: $860 – $960 with optional donation
    • Class Size: 10 maximum

The following classes are not appropriate for children with no prior knowledge of German. If you are interested in German language classes for your child(ren) in 6th-8th grade, please contact us and we will discuss options for a bridging arrangement.

Möwen/Seagulls (children entering 6th or 7th grade)

Teacher: tba

  • The Möwen class is for sixth- and seventh-graders. This class deepens students understanding of the German language, grammar and culture. Students will read books, write text and discuss current social topics.
    • Tuition: $880 – $980 with optional donation
    • Class Size: 10 maximum

Classes for Adults and 8+

Adult 1 – Beginners

Teacher: Finn Shepherd

This class is suitable for Beginner Adult learners with little to no knowledge of German. Students will work to develop skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Goal at the end of the year is the A1 level.. Classes are 60 minutes long.

Adult 2 – Intermediate

Teacher: Finn Shepherd


The Intermediate Adult class is for adults who have completed one year of learning so far. Students will deepen their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The class works with thematic units focused on everyday conversational topics which slowly introduce learners to relevant vocabulary and grammar. Goal at the end of the year is the A2 level. Classes are 60 minutes long.

  • Class time: Saturdays, 11am-12:15pm
  • Tuition $495 – $595 with optional donation

Adult 3 – Advanced

Teacher: Finn Shepherd


The Advanced Adult class is for adults who have completed two or more years of learning. Students will work on advanced skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  This is considered the B1 level.

  • Class time: Saturdays, 9:00am-10:00am
  • Tuition $495 – $595 with optional donation

PLEASE NOTE: WE WILL ADHERE TO THE MOST RECENT DANE COUNTY HEALTH DIRECTIVES. Detailed Covid-19 requirements for each class will be announced before classes start in the fall 2021.
