Classes & Registration

Our registration for our children’s classes, and German Adult Level 2 is for 2020-2021 is now closed. If you wish to join late, please contact us at germanschoolofmadison {at} gmail.com  You can find our current school year calendar here.

Initial student placement is based on age and the grade a student enters in the Fall. To accommodate different proficiency levels, we keep our class size between 6 and 12 students. Our classes from grades 1 to 7+ are designed around a two-year curriculum; students will normally stay in these classes for two years.

Typically our classes are held on Madison’s East Side. Due to pandemic restrictions and our focus on keeping our students safe, we have shifted to a mix of outdoor education, pre-recorded lessons and ZOOM lessons depending on the age and language proficiency of students. Find complete details on our COVID-19 precautions and modifications at the bottom of this page.

COVID-19 Precautions

PLEASE NOTE: WE WILL ADHERE TO THE MOST RECENT DANE COUNTY HEALTH DIRECTIVES. Due to these directives, our classes will occur in two different outdoor spaces, and occur sequentially, and parents are required to attend with all students under 5th grade. To adhere with Dane County Directive Emergency Order #9 on mass gatherings and youth programs, all outdoor gatherings will have less than 25 youths (not including teachers/staff). Masks will be required for participation and social distancing will be organized and maintained.

In response to the pandemic, we have instituted many changes to our programs to continue offering classes. The majority of classes will be conducted virtually via Zoom or pre-recorded, with a few outdoor classes when weather permits. Adaptations include:

Guided German Lessons will be sent every Tuesday

You will receive German lessons for your child every TUESDAY night, so that when your child has their Asynchronous Wednesdays (the day most schools have reduced virtual meetings or no meetings to allow teachers to prepare) at school, you will be able to provide language enrichment with fun German interactive language lessons for your child!  Your emailed lesson will contain a personal video from your teacher to guide your student through the lesson.  Your child can pause it whenever and do it whenever it works for them! A parent just needs to print the attachments in advance, and click the links into the browser tabs, so your student can follow along!  These lessons allow you to work nearby while this GUIDED independent work with your teacher in a YouTube provides a German lesson. Our lesson format will have everything your child needs to be more independent as they learn German on Asynchronous Wednesday (or any other day of the week!)

Weekly Saturday Zoom lessons for “in person” interaction

Languages are best learned through repeated immersion, so having two opportunities to work with new words is ideal for learning!  Pronunciation and speaking is the focus when the teacher will be together with your student to interact using ZOOM. Lessons will be centered around guessing games, little contests, seek and finds and all kinds of other interactive ways to work with German vocabulary!

Our year starts and ends outside

For the first 3 Saturdays in October and the last 3 in May, we will meet in person outside at Lake Edge Park!  With our masks, 6 feet apart, the children will sit on blankets in the warm fall sun.. surrounding their teacher and dusting off the summer cobwebs on their German language skills.  Parents (of young children) will relax behind them, soaking up the fresh air and listening to our expert teachers.

Note: In the past, we often offered week long summer camps after public school ends, or the week before it starts for children entering grades 1-5. Our students and community members have also enjoyed our celebrations of German Holidays such as St Martins, Nikolaus & Fasching. Currently we are re-envisioning our community events throughout the year, as the pandemic continues. At this time, we do not offer organized playgroup sessions for families with very young children. However, we are happy to connect German-speaking families with young children with each other.  Please email us, and we will forward it to our Spielgruppe contacts.
