St. Martin Lantern Walk 2017

On a chilly day our lanterns brought light and cheer to the neighborhood. Lantern songs, campfire bread, roasted marshmallows, hot cider — what could be better? Thanks to everyone who came out and celebrated St. Martin with us and especially to all those who helped organize — Krista Spiro, Philipp Müller, Mary Ellen Rutemeyer, as well as several parent volunteers. We couldn’t do it without you! All pictures © Ralph Grunewald.

St. Martin Celebration 2016

We had a great time at our St. Martin Celebration on November 13. Our students performed the story of St. Martin, the soldier who cut his cloak in half to share it with a beggar. Our lantern parade was followed by our traditional potluck. Thanks to everyone who helped with organizing the event and also to Clasen’s European Bakery in Middleton for donating several platters of German-style cookies!

You are cordially invited to our annual St. Martin’s Day celebration on Sunday, Nov. 13, at 4pm, at Shorewood Hills Community Center (901 Swarthmore Court)! Enjoy a campfire gathering, lantern parade, and a potluck dinner. This event has become a dear tradition in our community and we hope to see many friends, old and new. All welcome!

PLEASE BRING:

  • one lantern per child (see here for our make-a-lantern workshop on Nov. 6)
  • a contribution for the potluck meal — main dish, side, salad, or dessert
  • if possible, your own plates, cups and cutlery.

Please deliver your food and other items you want to leave (no valuables) to the community room before heading out again to the fire pit, where we will meet to sing a few St. Martin’s songs, led by members of the Madison Männerchor.

Around 5 PM we will head out for the lantern parade through the Shorewood Hills neighborhood (we recommend warm and reflective clothing). After the lantern parade, we will meet again at the community room and enjoy our potluck dinner.

If you have any questions , please contact our event coordinator Iris Hengst (iris at charter.net)

We hope to see you there! In the meantime, click here for pictures from last year’s event.

Laternenfest!

On Saint Martin’s Day Germans celebrate the story of St. Martin, a soldier-turned-monk who cut his coat in half to share it with a beggar, with colorful lantern processions. This year, more than 100 GSoM friends and family members came to our St. Martin celebration. It was a wonderful evening for showing off all those colorful lanterns!

Ready for the lantern parade

Before the parade, we got together to learn about the story of St. Martin. Here, DaF teacher Chris Tabisz is enacting the separation of the coat.

This year’s St. Martin celebration will take place on November 8 (Sunday), from 4:30-7:30 pm at the Shorewood Hills Community Center (901 Swarthmore Court). The program will begin with a performance of the story of St. Martin. At about 5 pm we’ll head out for the lantern parade around the Shorewood Hills neighborhood. Afterwards, we’ll head back to the Community Center for a potluck meal together.

All invited!

Please bring:

  • lanterns and matches (if you are using candles)
  • reflective clothing and/or a flashlight
  •  a contribution for the potluck meal
  •  plates, cups, and cutlery for your family, if you choose to do so (but we will also have disposable items)

If you signed up to be a volunteer at the event, please report to the Community Center at 4:00PM.

If you are looking for some inspiration on making a lantern, websites such as Pinterest.com or familie.de have plenty of great examples.

We hope to see you all!

Great turnout for St. Martin’s celebration

Laterne, Laterne… Sonne, Mond und Sterne

More than 140 friends of the German School of Madison celebrated St. Martin’s day with a lantern parade tonight. And what a parade it was! Owl lanterns, moon lanterns, dino lanterns, panda lanterns … connecting to a row of glowing dots, moving through the beautiful Shorewood Hills neighborhood.

Before the parade, we sang traditional lantern songs and enjoyed a performance of the legend of St. Martin by the students enrolled in our DaF1, Vorstufe, Deutsch 1, Deutsch 2, and Deutsch 3 classes.  There was even a snowflake dance!
