Scholarship for Summer Camp available!

German School of Madison

We are happy to announce a full scholarship for a child who would like to attend our German immersion camp this summer!

The scholarship is coming from an anonymous donor, who would like to provide this great summer camp experience to a child with little or no prior German exposure in financial need.

Please, spread to word to friends and neighbors about the camp and this scholarship.

To apply for the scholarship:
The child should write a brief letter (about 5 sentences — in English or German) AND draw a picture about why he/she would like this German immersion experience. What is the child’s connection to the German language and/or culture? What does the child hope to gain from this experience?

Please, send the application (the brief letter and picture) in an email with the subject line “GSoM Summer Camp – Scholarship Application” to our email address germanschoolofmadison@gmail.com. Please, make sure to write the following information on the application or in the application email:

1. Child’s Name
2. Child’s Age
3. Child’s Level of German (absolute beginners welcome)
4. Name of Parent(s)
5. Contact Email Address
6. Contact Telephone Number

The deadline for applications is Friday, April 3rd, 2015.

501(c)(3)

German School of Madison

Great news! We have been officially recognized as a 501(c)(3) organization.  This means that donations to the German School of Madison are now tax-deductible in Code with section 170.

If you would like to make a contribution to our cause, please use our Donations link (or get in touch with ous via email, germanschoolofmadison@gmail.com). A portion of every donation made through this website will be dedicated to our Scholarship Fund to allow access to German language education for families who might otherwise not be able to enroll their child/children in German language classes.

Meet our new partner: UW Law & Entrepreneurship Clinic

We are happy to announce that the UW Law @ Entrepreneurship Clinic has agreed to take as on as a client and has been working with us since mid January. “The Law & Entrepreneurship Clinic (L & E Clinic) provides free legal services to nascent entrepreneurs and early stage companies through the work of law students supervised by faculty and private sector attorneys”.

Third year law student Stephanie Whirry and supervising attorney Rebecca Burkes have been advising us on a variety of business planning, state licensure and other legal issues. Thanks to their invaluable advice and assistance we are getting close to file our application for federal non-profit status. This will allow us – once approved – to operate as a 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt organization and to solicit and accept tax-deductible donations.

We feel fortunate to be part of a University community that offers services such as the L&E Clinic. The Wisconsin Idea at its finest!

Spend the first week of summer with us! We are excited to announce our first German Language Summer Camp for children entering 1st grade to 6th grade in September 2015, featuring singing, dancing, arts-and-crafts, sports and of course German! The kids will learn and play with friends and with our excellent counselors. Every day the kids will gather to sing songs and dance during our Gesangsstunde and then divide up into Sprachteams for focused games and language activities. Each day the kids will also have the opportunity to choose their own Aktivität – be it Fußball, basteln or Kartenspiele.

  • WHEN: June 15 – June 19, 2015, from 9-12 noon each day
  • WHERE:  Neighborhood House, 29 S. Mills Street, Madison
  • WHAT: Games, songs, sports, art — all in German
  • HOW: Children will be in groups based on age, language proficiency, and personal interest (ratio of 4-5 children per teacher).
  • COST: $150 per child for the entire week (no discounts)

Celebrate the 5th season with us!

Please join us at our annual Fasching/Karneval Costume Party/Potluck on February 15!

Fasching, also known as Karneval, Fasnacht, Fastelabend, or the Fifth Season, is a pre-Lenten celebration observed mainly in the Catholic regions of German-speaking countries. Originally, revelers wore fright masks to scare away the evil spirits, but the costumes evolved over time from mainly scary ones into sweet and cute ones, from monsters to silly ones, and ended up being anything crazy, funny, or even taboo.

In short, Fasching is a time to get crazy! Anything goes! It’s a time to break the rules and make merry! We hope to see you there.

DATE: 1/15/2015 (Sunday), 4:30PM – 6:30PM 

LOCATION: Shorewood Hills Community Center, 901 Swarthmore Court, Madison, WI – UPSTAIRS

COSTUME PARADE: There will be a costume parade for all ages and best costume certificates, followed by jokes, skits, games, dancing, and merry-making! Adults and children alike are strongly encouraged to come in costume!

Fasching 2014

Any comical, funny Fasching skits or “Büttenrede” which you might want to perform yourself can be submitted to Iris Hengst (irishengst@charter.net).

COST: For families with students enrolled in the German School of Madison, there is no additional cost for this event.  For families not enrolled in the school, we request a $5 per family donation. Everyone will be asked to register at the entrance so we can assign numbers to the children for the costume parade and certificates.

POTLUCK: Each family is asked to bring a dish to share for our potluck (anything goes — casseroles, chilies, salads, breads, or desserts.) The school  will provide paperware and beverages. As always, you are encouraged to bring your own plates, cups, and cutlery to reduce waste.
